Upon arrival, park by the church and walk up to towards the mansion. PURCHASE ADMISSION IN THE GIFT SHOP, the small building next to the mansion/barn. Follow the signs.
Stop by for some old-time fun and a belated celebration for Presidents Day. Meet the neighbors and make new friends. Activities are provided by interpreters in period clothing portraying people of the 1800’s Norlands neighborhood or Livermore’s Washburn family.
At 1:30pm, in the farmer's cottage, is a special tribute to President George Washington. Interpreters will bake a version of Martha Washington’s cake. Stop by for a slice and some hot chocolate and participate in the celebration.
All day activities: Make a period craft in the warm and cozy Washburn kitchen and visit the one-room schoolhouse where the schoolmaster will be ready to greet his scholars. Guided tours of the 1867 Washburn family mansion will be offered every hour. Several family stories will be shared on the tour of this elegant home, especially stories about the family’s relationship with Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
Norlands’ staff will demonstrate traditional ice cutting techniques nearby on Bartlett Pond.
To participate in the ice cutting, stop at Bartlett Pond on Norlands Road, just down the hill from the Norlands. You can park on the road and walk out to the ice cutting. Dress warm! You are welcome to try cutting ice blocks with the guidance of our interpreters. Then, help us unload the blocks and pack our ice house in the barn.
Please note that there will not be any sleigh rides or wagon rides to or from the pond since the wagon is needed for hauling the ice. You can drive and park by the pond, or prepare for half-mile walk round trip.
Bring snowshoes and walk the historic carriage trail to the Pools of Simeon, reflecting pools designed in 1903 by the youngest Washburn brother, William Drew.
Warm up with a cup of soup and some hot chocolate in the Washburn kitchen, while supplies last.
There is something for all ages at this 19th-century style Cabin Fever Reliever.
In case of bad weather, this event will be canceled by 9am the day of the event. Call the Norlands and listen to the outgoing message, visit www.norlands.org, or check the Norlands Facebook Page for updates.
