Journey I - A Country School, 1853
Imagine starting your day in the District #7 one-room school with boys on one side and girls on the other. Your schoolmarm or master will greet you as a scholar who lived in the neighborhood. The school day will continue with reading, arithmetic and penmanship using the materials of the time. Be sure to mind your manners for fear of the ferule.
Journey III - Learning about the Washburn Family: The Busy Cradle
Meet the Washburn seven sons and three daughters. Take a tour of their ancestral home called the mansion house. As politicians, Civil War captains and entrepreneurs, learn of the impact they had in shaping our country as told through an interactive story where students become the Washburns.
Journey IV - A Visit to the Farm Kitchen
Come into the kitchen and look around. See how it compares to your kitchen today. Learn about the frugal country lifestyle and where things come from - farm or store. Try your hand at identifying the tools used long ago to make life easier for the farmer and his wife. Visit the barn and learn about the ice harvest.
Journey VI - Fun and Games of Long Ago
A day in the life of a rural Maine farm child was hard but there was time to play games while working. As children play a variety of word and number games led by their aunt, they discover the joys of “simple amusement”. A small piece a string, a button from mother’s scrap basket and a keen mind is all it takes to have fun.
Journey X - To Market, To Market
Market day comes every year. Using the book, The Ox-Cart Man, by Donald Hall, students act out how a family prepares for market day. After the story, with the use of authentic artifacts and a bartering game, students learn how a family’s needs were met. They tour the barn to find the oxen and the cart.
